Abstract

Purpose: Hypotension, inadequate dialysis of hemodialysis(HD) patients influence on increased physical discomfort, morbidity, and mortality. HD with cool temperature dialysate is one of the methods to prevent intradialytic
hypotension, physical discomfort(muscle cramp, chilling, itching sense), dialysis adequacy(Kt/V).

Method: Fifty-one patient proceeded HD with cool temperature diasylate(35.5¡É), forty-four patient with conventional dialysate temperature(36.5¡É). Blood pressure, physical discomfort(muscle cramp, chilling, itching sense) in visual analogue scale(VAS), and Kt/V to assess dialysis adequacy were measured.

Result: Itching sense is significantly decreased in cool temperature dialysate group (p=.041). However muscle cramp, chilling were not affected by temperature. Hypotension, Kt/V were not related to the temperature of dialysate either.
Conclusion: Decreased itching sense by using cool temperature dialysate would improve quality of life in hemodialysis patients.
